4. Gesture Controlled Car

This would be a control type based system that can assist paraplegics to operate a vehicle. A remote control in one hand with the ability to steer, accelerate and stop. An RC car would be used to demonstrate possibility of implementing in real motor vehicle. Safety applications will have to ensue to ensure a safe driving experience.

The user should be able to:
  • Operate a vehicle utilizing a controller with the abilities to start/shutoff vehicle, accelerate, decelerate, turn and stop vehicle

Skills Provided:
Jon will be able to provide mechanical and electrical systems knowledge, microcontroller knowledge and soldering skills.

5. Fall Alert Detection Electric Walker (F.A.D.E.W.)

This device will be of an existing walker which will be modified to include a tilt sensor system with an LTE module that can detect when a person has fallen with the walker. The person can also wear a device in the case that they fall, but the walker does not fall with them. In these two instances, the person may not be able to make a call, so the device would send an alert to loved ones or 911. The walker would also allow the person to sit down when they are too fatigued to walk. Using a motorized wheel system, the person would be able to maneuver around using the built in hand controls without the need to be pushed by another person.

  • The device shall have safety mechanisms in place to determine if the user falls.
    • This will emit an alarm that will alert anyone nearby for help as well as call 911 automatically in the case that the user is unable to make a call.
  • The device will also feature a sensor to be worn by the user so that if the user falls, but the walker does now, it will send the signal to the walker.
  • The walker will also have the ability to be controlled independently by the user while sitting down.

Skills Provided:
Jon will be able to provide mechanical and electrical systems knowledge, microcontroller knowledge and soldering skills.

Charlie will be able to provide coding knowledge, microcontroller knowledge, electrical knowledge and 3D printing skills.

Estimated Cost of Materials: $700

6. Body Positive Smart Health Mirror

This device will be a touch screen mirror that is able to be controlled using your voice as well as a touchscreen. A built-in webcam will be able to sense that a user is present. Using the built-in thermocouple sensor, the smart mirror will be able to detect whether or not the user is in well enough condition to go out. If no fever is detected, the mirror will compliment the user and inform them about their upcoming day. If a fever is detected, the mirror will suggest to the user to stay home and take care of their health. The user will be able to interact with the touchscreen. For example, a button can be pressed to start a two minute timer for brushing their teeth. After the timer is finished, the mirror can remind the user to floss. The user will also be able to ask the mirror any question and information will be displayed on the screen.

  • The device shall be able to detect that the user is in front of the mirror.
  • The device shall be able to measure the temperature of the user.
  • The device shall emit body positive messages through the speakers to promote positive self image.
  • The device shall give the user information about their day as well the the weather.
  • The device shall provide the user with answers taken from the web.

Skills Provided:
Jon will be able to provide mechanical and electrical systems knowledge, microcontroller knowledge and soldering skills.

Charlie will be able to provide coding knowledge, microcontroller knowledge, electrical knowledge and 3D printing skills.

7. Health Screening Entry System (H.S.E.S)

With Covid-19, it is has proven difficult to screen a person with questions and their temperature without the use of a another person doing the screening. This device will be a doorway system that asks the user Covid-19 related health questions, detects their temperature and checks whether or not they are wearing a mask. Given all the right conditions that ensures the safety of everyone inside the building, the door will open for the user.

  • The device shall be installed in the doorway and about three feet from the doorway.
  • The device shall have an interactive console that will ask individuals health related questions.
  • The device shall have a temperature sensor and camera sensor that automatically move to the appropriate heights of individuals to scan their temperature and detect a mask.
  • The device shall unlock and open the door given all the right conditions.
